Mack resignation follows loss of high-level support

John Mack's decision to leave Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, a firm he is credited with having built into one of the premier global investment banks, follows months of increasing isolation.

Mack, the company's president and chief operating officer, is understood to have had a long-running dispute with Philp Purcell, its chairman and chief executive, over their respective roles.
