A sharp fall in European equity trading activity in March has left banks and brokers feeling bruised in an asset class for which they had held high hopes at the start of the year.

March trading volumes were 18% below their 2015 level, more than wiping out a slightly stronger January and February and leaving European cash equities trading volumes for the first quarter down 5% at €5.8 trillion, according to data from technology vendor Fidessa.
