Market jitters and cautious PE firms push back end of the deal drought

Investors seem to have been spooked by the rise in bond yields, higher oil prices and the threat of a wider conflict in the Middle East

Investment bankers are by nature an optimistic bunch and many had a spring in their step as they started the new term in September. Although activity from takeovers and flotations was still running at multi-year lows, there had been encouraging signs.

“We were all working hard on pipelines in August and there was an expectation that the autumn would be much busier,” says one head of UK investment banking. “But then… nothing happened.”
