Martin Wheatley, the former head of the UK's powerful financial regulator, believes the City will suffer "irreversible damage" from the country's decision to leave the EU and that London could lose its status as Europe's top financial centre.

Wheatley, who was the chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority for four years, told Financial News that companies were making new hires outside of London and opening offices in rival financial hubs.
