Theresa May has confirmed the UK will leave the European single market, but said that a phased approach will be taken to avoid a "cliff-edge" for business.

In a highly anticipated speech on January 17, the prime minister said she wants to secure the "greatest possible access" to the single market through a "bold and ambitious" free-trade agreement.
