More than 70% of hedge funds lost money in May, with the industry losing on average 1.78%, according to estimates from data provider Barclay Group.

The loss was not enough to drag hedge funds' average performance for the year to date down to negative figures. Barclays' hedge fund index stood at 6.1% for the first five months of 2006.
