MEPs back tax on financial transactions

The controversial new EU levy on 'every type of transaction' could cost the City £12bn a year

Legislators have moved one step closer to a Europe-wide tax an all financial transactions, following a vote in the European Parliament in favour of the controversial measure.

If the proposals of the "Report on Innovative Financing" are adopted by the European Commission later this year, it could add more than £12bn to the UK's tax bill, according to Conservative MEP Vicky Ford.
