Northern Rock, the UK building society, has appointed Merrill Lynch as its joint corporate broker after a beauty parade involving a dozen investment banks.

Merrill Lynch has won the mandate alongside existing joint broker Hoare Govett, the broking arm of Dutch bank ABN Amro.
