Thomas Montag, who retired as co-head of global securities business at Goldman Sachs in December, has been appointed head of global sales and trading at Merrill Lynch after several months of being wooed by chief executive John Thain.

Montag will report directly to Thain and will be responsible for Merrill’s sales and trading activities across debt equities, according to a statement.
