Merrill Lynch expands in India

Merrill Lynch will pay $500m (€427m) to boost its 40% stake in an Indian joint venture to 90%, buying the extra shares from the local co-founder as it seeks to cement its position in the increasingly important Indian market.

Hemendra Kothari, co-founder of DSP Merrill Lynch, will continue as chairman of the bank and will take on added responsibility as a vice chairman of Merrill Lynch International.
