Merrill Lynch's Steffens goes it alone

John &quotLaunny&quot Steffens, one of the founders of Merrill Lynch, is leaving the giant US broker after 38 years to start his own investment management company.

Steffens, who is 59, was replaced by Stanley O'Neal as head of the firm's 15,000 US brokers just over a year ago.
