Merrill starts search for CEO

Stan O'Neal is retiring as chairman and chief executive of Merrill Lynch today without any severance payment as the bank forms a search committee to evaluate replacement candidates from inside and outside the company.

O'Neal's basic salary stops today and he will not receive any severance or a cash bonus. O'Neal is entitled to keep his stock options which have not yet vested as part of the retirement package for all Merrill employees.
