Monese halves fundraising target and weighs lay-offs

The digital lender was planning to raise up to £100m but will now rely on existing investors – Kinnevik, PayPal and Augmentum Fintech – to secure roughly half the sum

Pressure caused by the coronavirus crisis has forced digital bank Monese to rein in its growth plans and consider laying off staff based in Lisbon, Portugal.

The London-headquartered start-up, which has more than two million customers across Europe, had been planning to raise between £80m and £100m to fuel ambitious growth plans which included overseas expansion, but the pandemic has forced a rethink.
