Jon Moulton, the founder and chief executive of Alchemy Partners and one of the best-known names in private equity, has today quit after disagreements with other partners over the firm’s strategy - raising questions about the future of the mid-market buyout house.

Moulton declined to comment at his home but has handed in his notice a year ahead of his formal retirement from the firm he founded in 1997.
