Nasdaq seeks greater watchdog role

US exchange wants to take some surveillance activities away from Finra

The Nasdaq Stock Market wants to take on a greater role in policing its own markets, after years of handing duties off to a private regulator.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is weighing a plan submitted by Nasdaq that would allow the exchange to take over some market surveillance currently performed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, according to regulatory documents filed this week.
