Banks are stepping up efforts to keep data safe in the face of an increase in cyber attacks as new European Union rules mean institutions could be liable for hefty fines when data is lost or stolen.

Keeping sensitive data out of the hands of online criminals is one the biggest challenges banks face. Cyber attacks are on the rise and cost the global economy around £266 billion each year, according to the British Bankers' Association.
