New players try their hand at energy trading

Hedge funds and proprietary trading desks are targeting the sector

Banks and brokerages look set to expand their activity in the energy trading markets during 2004, building on the positions they have established over the past 18 months.

Banks such as Deutsche Bank, ABN Amro and Bank of America are growing their over-the-counter (OTC) and exchange-traded energy activities, competing alongside more established players such as Goldman Sachs and Société Générale.
