New UK regulator to oversee audit firms

The UK government has toughened its stance on auditing and accounting regulation with the creation of a new independent watchdog, in the wake of last year's high-profile corporate scandals.

Patricia Hewitt, the UK secretary of state for trade and industry, said that measures will be introduced to reinforce the independence of audit firms from their corporate clients. The reforms are the result of an enquiry initiated nearly a year ago after the collapse of Enron.
