City stockbroker Numis has hired the head of UK institutional sales at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, as it continues to bulk up despite new European trading rules that are expected to squeeze smaller equities players.

Ulick Burke is set to join Numis on Monday, according to people close to the situation, as part of a broader expansion at the firm. He will join as a director — the most senior role in Numis’s equities team.
