The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has agreed to consider a merger with the American Stock Exchange (Amex) following an approach from Salomon Smith Barney (SSB).

The approach from SSB, adviser to Amex's parent National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), came late last year. Talk of a link-up between the two exchanges has surfaced many times in the past.
