NYSE faces crunch time as an open-outcry bastion

A seat at the top table is no longer sought after

Behind the imposing Corinthian columns that welcome visitors to the New York Stock Exchange it has been a year of tumultuous change. It could prove to be the watershed that sends the exchange, a bastion of traditional floor trading, on the slope towards full automation.

It has been a tough initiation for John Thain, the former Goldman Sachs executive who took over as chief executive of the 212-year-old exchange in January.
