One in five UK employers plan to make staff redundant

Employers have been able to avoid mass redundancies by claiming support through the government’s coronavirus job retention furlough scheme

The UK government’s furlough scheme has saved 4.2 million jobs but more than one in five British companies are still preparing to make staff redundant, an employment survey has found.

The statistics, in a joint report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and global Swiss-based recruitment group Adecco, show that 21% of firms plan to make redundancies over the next couple months. This is an increase on the previous quarter, which showed that 16% of firms were considering these measures, the 18 May report said.
