O'Neal hints that Merrill would consider merger

Stan O'Neal, chairman and chief executive of Merrill Lynch, has hinted that the Wall Street investment bank would consider a merger, but said he did not believe that offering large loans to corporate clients as a way to attract underwriting business "is a proposition that pays for itself."

The architect of cost cuts which some think are aimed at making the firm a more attractive merger candidate, O'Neal would not rule out combining with another financial firm.
