Nobody comes out looking good from Santander’s aborted hiring of Andrea Orcel.

According to the Spanish bank’s account of the debacle, Ana Botín, its executive chairman, seems to have been so eager to hire her favourite investment banker as chief executive that she agreed to rush out the announcement before the bank had nailed down how much he would cost. This would have been reckless even if Orcel had been the right person for the job.
