Pension schemes could bypass Solvency II requirements

Charlie McCreevy, the EU's internal markets commissioner, has given a strong indication that an EU directive being drawn up to toughen up reporting standards for insurance companies will not apply to pension schemes.

McCreevy said he had no intention of backing proposals that would risk the closure of defined benefit, or final salary, schemes, according to trade magazine Investments & Pensions Europe.
