UK supermarket Tesco is a company used to leading its field, but in pensions it has come to lead its industry almost without meaning to.

One by one, during the past decade or so, most of the UK's largest listed companies have closed their increasingly costly defined-benefit pension plans, leaving Tesco standing almost alone among its peers.
