PIIGS take different routes to pension reform

Governments across Europe tackle deficits with systemic change

This has been the year when governments across Europe were finally forced to become more realistic about pension reform.

The demographic threat to future pension provision has been clear for years - nine of the 10 populations with the highest median ages in the world are in Europe. But government responses to the problem had, until recently, mostly consisted of burying their heads in the sand.
