Bets on who will win the pan-European brokerage of the year in the Thomson Extel survey have been very "skinny" according to Cantor Index, the company running the book.

The money has come in for frontrunners UBS and Citigroup, while a few pennies have been put down for Merrill Lynch, affectionately entitled the "Thundering Herd", which once dominated the survey.
