Polish coalition decision could stall privatisation

The decision by SLD, the winning party in the Polish national elections, to choose as a coalition partner the Polish Peasant Party (PSL) could set back the pace of privatisation in the country.

The SLD is broadly in support of the privatisation programme started by its predecessor, the Solidarity government. But because it only won 41% of the seats in parliament, the party was forced to either press on as a minority government or find a coalition partner.
