The global private equity industry almost set a new record for acquiring companies in 2016 – and still may, as stragglers report in, according to industry analysts Preqin.

The research firm recorded 3,985 acquisitions by private equity firms globally during 2016. That was up from 3,955 in 2015 and close to the all-time high of 4,006 recorded in 2014.
