When Erik Brooks’ Ethos Capital launched a surprise $1.1bn bid for the Public Interest Registry, he had little idea how much furore the acquisition would cause.

PIR, which manages the rights of the .org domain, is used by some of the world’s most high-profile not-for-profit groups, ranging from Greenpeace and Human Rights Watch to Unesco and Amnesty International.
