Private equity portfolios shrink, even as assets soar

Private equity firms continue to raise assets at a record pace — but their portfolios are getting smaller.

Firms continued to sell assets at a healthy clip last year, resulting in a surge of distributions for investors. At the same time, private equity fund-raising rose to a record $453bn, according to Preqin.
