The commanding heights of the bigger economies in Central and Eastern Europe have long been transferred to the private sector. Hungary, the Czech Republic and, to a lesser extent, Poland and Russia are primarily private-sector driven economies.
The focus has shifted to selling minority government holdings, some companies in the telecommunications and transport sectors whose sales could not be completed before the drop in investor enthusiasm, and politically sensitive utilities.
