Race for best execution takes portfolio trading mainstream

Fund managers have to find cheaper methods of dealing

The race to offer best execution is accelerating as new entrants and existing players in portfolio trading apply the principles governing the rest of their businesses to the trading floor.

Mike Stewart, head of global portfolio trading at Merrill Lynch, says: "Portfolio trading is no longer seen as a silo or specialised unit, but as a set of technologies and practices that can be applied to the equity business overall."
