Rathbone Brothers, the UK private client stockbroker, has formally admitted this afternoon that it is trying to gatecrash an agreed merger between its rivals Rensburg and Carr Sheppards Crosthwaite.

Earlier today, sources close to the deal told Financial News that Rathbone Brothers had made an offer for Rensburg.
