Merrill Lynch faces the prospect of losing John Gunn, one of its leading wealth management experts, and four others from the Edinburgh-based team.

Rathbone Brothers' investment management business in Edinburgh is understood to have offered the team key roles within the rapidly expanding business. Merrill Lynch executives, however, have flown to Scotland to hold negotiations with the five, who are part of a 15-strong group in Edinburgh.
