Two of the UK's biggest financial services companies have challenged themselves to improve the pay disparity between their male and female staff, as concrete details of a vast gender remuneration gap in the sector begin to emerge.

Royal Bank of Scotland and the investment and insurance giant Standard Life Aberdeen published the figures in their respective annual reports this morning.
