RBS in $4.9bn US settlement over mortgage-backed securities

Bank says $3.4bn of amount to be covered by existing provisions, with an incremental second-quarter charge of $1.4bn

Royal Bank of Scotland has agreed to pay $4.9bn to settle with the US Department of Justice over the sale of toxic mortgage-backed securities in the in the lead-up to the global financial crisis, clearing the path for the bank’s privatisation.

RBS said it reached a civil settlement “in principle” with the Justice Department to end the long-running probe into the matter.
