RBS chief Hester to step down

Surprise move raises doubts over prospects for a speedy privatisation of the majority state-owned bank

Royal Bank of Scotland Group chief executive Stephen Hester will step down at the end of the year, a surprise move that raises doubts over the likelihood of a speedy privatisation of the 81%-government owned lender.

Hester is set to stay on at the bank until December to oversee a transition, the lender said Wednesday. RBS said it would consider internal and external replacement candidates.
