For many City leaders returning to work after the Christmas break there is one big question sitting in their in-trays: what on earth is the Brexit deal on financial services going to look like.

To which the honest answer must be: haven’t a clue. The last few weeks have done little to clarify things with a mix of good news and bad news. On balance I think the prospects of a favourable outcome for the City have improved a bit.
