Blessing urges banks to focus on retail deposits

Blessing says the Basel III banking regulations needed fine tuning, but in principle the rules would lead the industry in the right direction

Putting retail deposits back at the heart of banking will ease liquidity concerns and help stabilise markets, according to a senior European banker.

Martin Blessing, chief executive of Commerzbank, told delegates at the Sibos conference in Amsterdam yesterday that new banking regulation would help create liquidity in the system by refocusing on retail deposits.
