Regulator presses UniCredit over Mediobanca clout

Italian lender UniCredit, which owns an 18% stake in Mediobanca, could be forced to reduce the size of its holding and step aside from strategic decisions at its domestic rival as a condition of its takeover of Rome-based bank Capitalia.

The Italian Antitrust Commission met yesterday to discuss UniCredit’'s €Â€22bn ($30bn) takeover of Capitalia and consider ways to address competition issues, according to national newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
