Restatement costs hit $800m at Fannie Mae

Administrative expenses at Fannie Mae, the US government-backed mortgage company, nearly doubled in the first quarter of this year as costs for the ongoing restatement of its accounts rose to an estimated $800m (€626m).

Fannie Mae is estimated to have overstated its earnings by up to $11bn and has been ordered to restate its accounts by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the US regulator.
