Retail sector can re-open in June, says UK prime minister

After two months of lockdown, 'non-essential' shops can welcome the public again if they adhere to safety guidelines

High street shops, department stores and shopping centres across England can prepare to re-open in June more than two months after closing for the nationwide lockdown, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced.

Outdoor markets and showrooms will re-open first on 1 June. Other non-essential retail, including shops selling clothes, shoes, toys, furniture, books and electronics, for example, can open their doors from 15 June if the government’s five tests are met.
