Balarkas: Emotion and politics are 'distorting' regulatory debate

The trading industry needs to raise the quality of debate on regulation, which is veering into dangerous and emotive territory, warns the former Instinet Europe chief

Richard Balarkas has hit out against the increasingly "dangerous" political mood surrounding electronic equities trading and has called for the industry to "raise the quality of debate" regarding the purpose of the global equities markets.

Balarkas, a pioneer of electronic trading and most recently chief executive of Instinet Europe, was speaking last night at the annual Financial News Awards for Excellence in Trading & Technology.
