Russia set for sanctions hit as US, EU and UK pledge tough retaliation over Ukraine

Economic ties could face severe consequences, Western powers warn, as Russian troops move into breakaway regions of Ukraine

The US and its European allies are set to announce tough new sanctions against Russia after President Vladimir Putin formally recognised two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine and ordered the deployment of troops there.

Putin’s announcement on 21 February drew international condemnation from world leaders, with several nations saying they were preparing to levy stringent sanctions on Russia.
