The optimistic outlook for the European investment banking sector has been given a further boost by Standard & Poor's, the credit rating agency. It said on Wednesday that it may upgrade BNP Paribas, the French banking group.

S&P raised the outlook to positive from stable on BNP Paribas' low double-A long-term credit rating, citing the French bank's "strong operating earnings capacity and sound risk profile".
