S&P hedge index lags behind equities

The Standard & Poor's hedge fund index fell behind equities in December 2002, rising 1.46% over the month while equity markets rebounded by over 5%.

The best performer was S&P's Arbitrage Index which posted returns of 1.83%. This index is comprised of equity market neutral, fixed-income arbitrage and convertible arbitrage funds. In the fourth quarter, the arbitrage index returned 1.46%.
