Salomon Smith Barney and Lazard have won the mandate to advise British Energy, the beleaguered UK power company, on its financial restructuring.

British Energy, which won an extension of emergency aid from the UK government on Thursday, will issue new bonds and shares and in exchange for existing debt. The company hopes to replace existing liabilities with long-term bonds.
