SEC meeting could seal Big Five fate

The US Securities & Exchange Commission's meeting to discuss rules governing auditor independence, could spark further debate about the future of the Big Five accountants' corporate finance and advisory operations.

The accountancy firms are hoping for a compromise so that they are not forced to split off their consultancy operations, and in recent days the SEC appears to have softened its stance and indicated that a complete split is unlikely.
